Marionette Lines: What Causes Them & How Filler Helps
Marionette lines are one of the most common concerns in the lower face — the creases that run from the corners of the mouth down toward the chin. They can make you look sad or stern even when you’re perfectly happy. Here’s why they form and how filler can help.
What marionette lines are
Marionette lines get their name from the hinged jaw of a marionette puppet. They’re the vertical folds that develop from the corners of the mouth downward, and along with them, the mouth corners themselves can start to turn slightly down.
Why they form
A few things work together over time:
- Volume loss in the cheeks and mid-face, which reduces support above the mouth
- Skin changes — less collagen and elasticity as we age
- Repeated movement and simple gravity
Because the cause is mostly lost support, the fix is usually about restoring support — which is exactly what dermal filler does.
How filler helps
Hyaluronic-acid dermal filler is placed along the fold and the pre-jowl area to restore volume, soften the crease, and gently support the corners of the mouth. In many cases, Crystal will also assess the cheeks — restoring mid-face support (see cheek filler) often improves marionette lines more naturally than filling the line alone.
That “treat the cause, not just the crease” approach is what keeps results looking natural rather than heavy.
Who it’s for
- People bothered by downturned mouth corners or a “sad” resting expression
- Those noticing deepening folds from the mouth toward the chin
- Anyone wanting a refreshed lower face without surgery
An honest note: filler softens moderate lines and restores support — it doesn’t lift significantly loose skin. Crystal will tell you plainly what filler can and can’t achieve for your face.
What to expect
- Consultation — Crystal assesses your lower face and where the support is actually needed.
- Treatment — filler placed with a needle or cannula after numbing; about 30–45 minutes.
- Recovery — mild swelling or bruising that settles within a few days.
- Results — immediate, settling over one to two weeks, and often lasting 12+ months.
