Smile lines, also called nasolabial folds, run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Marionette lines run from the corners of the mouth down toward the chin. Both deepen as the cheeks lose volume and the skin above them drifts down. Filler placed directly into the fold softens it. Filler placed in the cheek can lift the fold from above.
Which approach is right depends on your face, which is why Crystal assesses the whole mid-face first. Filling the fold alone when the cause is the cheek tends to give a flat result. Often the best answer is a little of both.
