What it is.
The masseter is the large chewing muscle at the back of the jaw. When it is overworked from clenching or grinding, it enlarges, which widens the lower face and can cause jaw tension, headaches and worn teeth. Masseter Botox places neurotoxin into the muscle so it relaxes and, over a few months, reduces in size.
Patients come for two reasons. Some want relief from clenching and the tension that comes with it. Others want a softer, more oval lower face. Many get both.
Every treatment is performed by Crystal Simm, RPN. Chewing and speech are not affected; the muscle simply stops overworking.
What to expect.

Consultation
Crystal assesses the size and strength of the masseter by having you clench, reviews your history, and sets expectations for both relief and slimming.

Treatment
A few small injections into each masseter. About 15 minutes. No numbing is usually needed.

Recovery
None to speak of. Avoid rubbing the area and lying down for a few hours.

Results
Clenching eases within one to two weeks. Visible slimming takes six to eight weeks as the muscle reduces. Results last three to six months, and repeat treatment tends to hold longer.

Common questions.
Will it affect my chewing?
No. The muscle relaxes but keeps working. Some patients notice slight tiredness chewing very tough food in the first weeks, which passes.
How long until my jaw looks slimmer?
Slimming is gradual because the muscle shrinks as it rests. Most people see it at six to eight weeks, with the full effect around three months.
How often do I need it?
Typically every three to six months at first. Once the muscle has reduced, many patients can stretch the interval.
Is this the same as regular Botox?
Same product, different muscle and a higher dose. Crystal treats it as its own consultation.
