Postpartum Hair Loss: What's Normal & Can PRP Help?

Few things are more alarming than the handfuls of hair that can come out in the months after having a baby. If you’re in that stage: take a breath — most postpartum shedding is temporary. Here’s what’s happening, and where PRP fits (and doesn’t).

Why postpartum shedding happens

During pregnancy, elevated hormones keep more of your hair in its growth phase — which is why pregnancy hair often feels thick and full. After birth, hormone levels shift and all that “extra” hair moves into the shedding phase at once, usually starting around 2–4 months postpartum. It looks dramatic because it’s synchronized, not because something is wrong.

The honest first answer: time

For most people, postpartum shedding resolves on its own within 6–12 months as the hair cycle rebalances. That’s the truthful starting point — and any clinic that pushes you into treatment in the middle of normal shedding isn’t giving you straight advice.

When PRP is worth considering

PRP hair restoration becomes a reasonable conversation when:

  • Shedding persists well beyond a year postpartum
  • Density isn’t returning in areas like the temples or part line
  • There was thinning before pregnancy that the postpartum shed made worse

PRP uses platelets from your own blood to support your follicles’ natural function, delivered as a 5-session program with results that build over months (how it works).

Important timing note

If you’re breastfeeding, timing matters — Crystal will discuss what’s appropriate for your situation at consultation, and hormonal factors (like thyroid changes, which are common postpartum) are worth reviewing with your family doctor as part of the picture. This is a case where good care means coordinating, not rushing.

What to do right now

  1. Be patient with the normal window (up to ~12 months).
  2. Be gentle — avoid tight styles and harsh treatments while shedding.
  3. If it’s persisting, get an honest assessment.
