What Are Dermal Fillers and How Do They Work?

What Are Dermal Fillers and How Do They Work?

“Filler” gets talked about a lot, but it’s often misunderstood. If you’re considering it for the first time, here’s a clear, no-hype explanation of what dermal fillers actually are and how they work.

What dermal fillers are

Dermal fillers are gel-based treatments injected just beneath the skin to restore volume, smooth folds, and refine contours. Most modern fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA) — a substance your body produces naturally that helps skin hold moisture and stay plump.

That’s an important point: HA fillers aren’t a foreign, permanent substance. They’re made from something your body already recognizes, and they break down gradually over time.

What fillers can treat

Filler works by replacing volume that’s been lost or adding subtle support where you want more definition. Common areas include:

  • Lips — gentle fullness and shape (you can read more on how long lip fillers last)
  • Cheeks — lift and structure
  • Under-eyes — softening hollows and shadows (see do fillers help under-eye bags)
  • Jawline and chin — definition and balance
  • Smile lines — softening deeper folds

You can see all of these on our dermal fillers page.

How fillers differ from Botox

People often lump them together, but they do different jobs:

  • Dermal fillers add volume — they fill, support, and contour.
  • Botox / neurotoxin relaxes muscles — it softens the lines created by movement, like forehead and frown lines.

Many people use them for completely different concerns, and some use both. The right choice depends on what’s actually bothering you, which is what a consultation is for.

What to expect

  1. Consultation — Crystal assesses your facial proportions and maps a plan to your goals.
  2. Treatment — filler is placed with a fine needle or cannula, with numbing for comfort. Most appointments take 30–45 minutes.
  3. Recovery — mild swelling or bruising is common and usually settles within a few days.
  4. Results — visible immediately, settling over one to two weeks. Depending on the product and area, results often last 6–18 months.

Will it look obvious?

Done conservatively, no. The “overdone” look usually comes from too much product placed too fast. Crystal’s approach is to build gradually — many patients start with a single syringe — so the result looks balanced and like you, just refreshed. Hyaluronic acid fillers can also often be dissolved if needed, which adds a layer of reassurance for first-timers.

Thinking about it?

The best way to understand what filler could do for your specific face is an in-person assessment.
