Botox vs Dysport: What's the Difference?

Botox and Dysport come up constantly when people start researching wrinkle treatments. They’re often talked about as rivals, but they’re more like two tools that do the same job slightly differently. Here’s how they compare.

They’re the same type of treatment

Both Botox and Dysport are neurotoxins made from the same active ingredient family (botulinum toxin type A). Both work the same way: they temporarily relax the small muscles that create expression lines, softening forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet. So the core result — a refreshed, smoother look — is similar with either.

Where they differ

The differences are subtle and mostly matter to your injector, not your mirror:

  • Onset: Dysport can kick in a little faster for some people (often a day or two sooner).
  • Spread / diffusion: Dysport tends to spread a bit more from the injection point, which can be an advantage for larger areas like the forehead — and is why precise placement matters.
  • Dosing: They’re dosed differently (the unit counts aren’t equivalent), so a “unit” of one isn’t a “unit” of the other. This is why comparing per-unit prices between them is misleading.
  • Feel/results: Most patients are happy with either; some develop a personal preference over time.

So which should you choose?

Honestly — it’s less about the brand and more about the injector. A skilled injector choosing the right product, dose, and placement for your anatomy matters far more than which name is on the vial. Many patients do perfectly well with either, and some try both over time to see what they prefer.

At Chrysalis Beauté, Crystal Simm, RPN, will recommend the option she feels suits your goals and treatment area during your consultation. You can read more about how long results last and how Botox is priced.

The takeaway

Botox vs Dysport isn’t a “better/worse” question — they’re two reliable tools. The result comes down to who’s holding the needle.
